Conchita Wurst's "Heroes" - Single Review

Since rightfully winning the Eurovision Song Contest in May, Austria native Conchita Wurst has been working on plans for a full length debut album said to be inspired by the likes of Cher and Tina Turner. Her winning performance, "Rise Like a Phoenix", was an opera-styled pop song about strength and retribution, a message she carries over to her second official offering, the uplifting "Heroes", released last week.

The talented artist is switching up her sound, going for a more pop-leaning effort instead of the classical-inspired pieces released before. "Heroes" deals with the issue of universal love, empowering listeners with encouraging, story-like lyrics. "I feel it like a surge, running through my veins, just kiss me and revive this love again," Wurst gracefully sings on the soft verses before she lets her powerful voice shine on the memorable chorus.

Whether the song is pop or operatic in composition, the new release is carried by Wurst's incredible vocal abilities, the reason why she won a worldwide competition this past summer. The single is a good follow up for the artist who was quickly thrown into the spotlight, highlighting her unique delivery on a song that has more crossover appeal than her previous recordings.

Thankfully "Heroes" carries the over-the-top, theatrical sound we are used to hearing from Wurst, and while the overjoyed, overly positive nature of similar songs can become cliche or overdone, the beautiful artist succeeds in making it sound and appear sincere and true. If the new single will pick up momentum for Wurst's music career is still to be seen, but for her fans, it is a acclaimed look into what the artist can really do.
